Discourse Analysis of Hachalu Hundessa’s Lyrics: ‘Jirra!’

Abstract

The main intention of this article analyzes the discourse of Hachalu Hundessa‟s lyrics, „Jirra‟. To attain this objective, qualitative research approach was employed, specifically discourse analysis was used and narrative interpretations were given on the lyric. Thus, the result of this single song interpretation indicated that anyone with empathetic human element cannot be without deep feelings of his/her nation being oppressed.That is what the singer did for marginalized people through his songs. The result also indicated that even though the burden loaded on the Oromoo nation is over affluent and is shaded the existence of the nation, the singer bell the ring through his artistic song, “Jirra” /we are still alive/. It also indicated that a bottleneck struggle should unify the oppressed nation to get back what the people desire. Moreover, self-interest group of individuals of the nation itself became enemy to their own nation. Finally, the result showed that the singer‟s lyric „Jirra‟ awaken the people to unite and stand for the desired freedom that resulted in current government reforms.
