Abstract

This study examines the interplay between the growth trajectory and governance practices of Awach SACCOS in Ethiopia. Using 16 years of financial, employee and membership data (2007-2023), the study analyzed growth trends descriptively using line graphs, while interview data from eleven purposively selected respondents were analyzed thematically to examine governance practices. The results showed significant growth in membership, employment, savings mobilization, lending, assets and capital formation, and profit generation. Governance practices at Awach SACCOS were identified as key factors in the growth and highlighted their crucial role in improving the cooperative's impact on members' living standards. A strong governance framework not only promotes growth but also ensures long-term sustainability. These results provide valuable insights for Awach and other similar organizations aiming to strengthen their development strategies and governance practices.
